It’s still early days, but already the campaign to take the best of British franchising overseas is cutting through and changing UK Franchisors behaviour for the first time.

Trading overseas is vital for ensuring the long term health of the UK economy. As such, HM Government has committed to support 100,000 additional UK businesses to sell their goods or services overseas by 2020.

In May 2016, we made a strategic decision to help mobilise the franchise business community to support these companies by finding great partners and combining together in launching Franchise Great Britain into new territories

The bull’s-eye target for this campaign was the group of Great British franchisors who were not open to the idea of exporting. Not because they didn’t believe it would be good for their business, but because they didn’t believe there was any overseas demand for what they offered.

At Airstream Consultants/TopFranchise.net we set out to turn this perception into reality and show franchisors see demand is out there.

Looking at US based franchisors you can see some great and more off the wall ideas doing very well in the UK/EU/Asia and Middle East.

We believe that British Franchisors are sitting on very valuable brands and these can be connected them to master franchisors matched for their business and we are here to inspire British Franchisors to take action.

Firstly, we attended every UKTI workshop, we developed TopFranchise.net with help from franchise guru Les Armitage and set up an online hub that housed  live franchise opportunities from around the globe.

Second, we set up a broker network in strategic locations around the world. a franchise operations and training support system was setup to allow fast growth with the needful support to drive business but without the usual eye-wateringly high costs usually associated with overseas expansion.

The prospect of franchising in overseas (new) markets can often feel daunting. There are many things to consider, such as how you will identify the potential franchisee or master franchise buyer for your product or service in the target market.

Which market first?

The overseas end user buyers and customers your franchisee encounter are not necessarily going to respond like those in the UK and how can we react as they vary in each country.

Even the legal aspects of franchising legislation comes up as companies often are unsure of the laws around franchising in new countries. And what about cultural business etiquette and those unwritten norms and taboos— How do you position your brand?

Franchising will see change in the UK unless the wheels of EU Brexit are set in motion quickly.

It would be beneficial to all if negotiations for trade with Europe is set in place and it will help all nations if the UK is offered a deal without huge constraints.

If nothing is done, times will get tough and it could then be expected that voters will be remorseful to the point of another referendum being demanded.

Our country has a population who voted in favour of recession, not directly but by leaving the EU it was always forecast and it is starting to look as though we are rapidly heading into tough times.

This has been established as a forum of comment on the impact of Brexit and Franchising business.

The Franchising banks are currently not planning change to lending criteria within the franchising sector but they do soon change their minds and any franchise buyer on the cusp of buying would be advised to get on with an application whilst the banks are funding new businesses.

We want to be clear that for franchising and Europe, it is very much ‘business as UNUSUAL’. We will continue to work closely to monitor the situation and advise global franchisors on Franchising across Europe.

The fact is that as bank shares have been wiped over the last three days, there will not be money to invest in new franchise businesses and even huge infrastructure projects are being placed on a back burner.

Just look at the news, even the NHS was £350m a week better off according to the leave campaigners until Mr Nigel Farage admitted it was sales speak and not the true picture.

Another aspect was the assumption that a free trade deal could be struck, with UK borders closed and we could have business as usual with immigration under control.

Today– Brexit ministers are faced with a slight offer of trade with the EU based on free movement between countries and as final as we are about our border it comes at a huge price.

The price of closed borders with restricted trade is  a massive downdraft in the financial markets and  £3 trillion just got wiped off the global markets in our first 24 hours.

Richard Branson has commented “We lost more money in British shares than we paid into the European Union since the European Union started in one day. It’s been a bloodbath”.

“Young people, overwhelmingly, are telling me up until four days ago they could live and work in 28 countries – suddenly they’re restricted to one country. Britain’s going to be broken up into smaller units.”

Frankly any Franchisor seeking a foothold on the Continent would be advised to go for it now and make the most of our single market.

The World’s Largest Off High Street Estate Agents Steps Up UK Market Challenge

People start their searches online so why aren’t estate agents online? Says Sarah Beeny— I say the agents are all online as they all have a website and simply back this up with an office.

The issue is the cost versus the service and what the agent does or does not do for their money

UK High Street Estate Agency is in turmoil, I came into the Dragons’ Den yet no Dragon agreed and several years later the writing is on the wall

BBC Dragons' Den The UK’s largest high street agent, Countrywide, is drawing up plans for an online agency model and the largest off high street estate agent in the World has also set up in the UK.

This behemoth is Keller Williams a company with a very clever business model, it is not on the high street, it is online and even better the company is not just online have local property guides to conduct face to face meetings. I don’t need a Dragon as KW do all the investment in business tools for me.

To be competitive each person who meets a client is an agent who can tailor the price to be as low or high as the service the seller requires.

Sometimes a Keller Williams agent will charge ZERO, those online guys just cannot compete, how does it end up being ZERO charge to a seller you might ask and the answer comes from the growth in buyers taking on an agent to procure properties for a fee.

A buyers agent might be working for an investor or a corporate employee buyer relocating to a new area as part of a career mover.

Alternatively the seller might be property savvy, seeking just the bare minimum of help and then a KW agent can be of service with best price policies.

What we do know is the high street agent is worrying.

TV presenter and founder of online estate agent Tepilo Sarah Beeny says that high street estate agents’ offices are empty and “totally redundant” in the Daily Telegraph recently
